I had the idea that it would be amazing to have hackerhouses — and better still, to have a nice audience inside them, around a niche. Nurturing influential Substrate founders in one place, funded from the Polkadot / Kusama treasury.

We found a place to bootstrap it in Bled, Slovenia, in April 2022 — a shopping mall unit, 196sqm, sunny, with a view of the castle, a minute from the lake. We wanted you to have a cozy stay in the Julian Alps while working on your unicorn idea. Over 20 high-signal folks passed through in the summer of 2022, and it ran for nearly three years.

I was jack of all trades running the place for digital nomads.

Inspiration

Inspired by HackBase, out of the CCC / hackerspaces movement and CreatorCabins.

We wanted to set up affordable living and cover food costs for those willing to contribute to the Polkadot/Kusama/Substrate ecosystem, and to take charge, relocate, and be co-located at a strong hive of Substrate wisdom and hard-working peers.

Running costs

Running costs should be covered by the operator, who can go to the treasury for reimbursement for doing this service in the legacy world — slowly forming small hyper-local crypto enclaves before enacting network unions.

Residency can be shared with NFT artists who bring the right tribe, helping them create their work under better conditions, with subsidized rent and food.
